Skellig Michael lies 12 kilometres off Bolus Head, the western most tip of the Iveragh Peninsula, Co. Kerry, Ireland. Early Christian monks believed that union with God could best be attained by withdrawal to isolated regions. Between the 6TH and 8TH centuries the island became an important spiritual retreat for a settlement of ascetic monks.
